L-Carnitine versus D-Carnitine
send     print
Carnitine like many biologically active molecules, may exist in two forms: L-Carnitine and D-Carnitine. The distinction between racemic D,L-Carnitine and the optically pure L-Carnitine is important because only the L-isomer is available from natural sources and is physiologically active. In fact, the D-form is biologically inactive and
inhibits the uptake of the L-Carnitine. D-Carnitine is potentially harmful. Lonza's Carnipure™ production process directly produces the L-isomer.
